Percy teaser block.jpgIt's not nice to think about what would happen if you found yourself unable to work because of illness or injury. Getting your finances into good shape and boosting your financial readiness is a great way of dispelling some of these worries.

This quick calculator should take you no more than 5 minutes and it'll help give you a good idea of the kind of payments you'd be entitled to in the worst-case scenario. It may even serve as a bit of a reality check if you find that your entitlements aren't likely to be sufficient.

If this is the case, we've got some options for you to consider, like building a rainy-day fund or checking the details of your employer's benefits. Before you start the calculator, it might be helpful to have a couple of documents to hand, such as a recent payslip and council tax bill.

Important information about Percy: The Protection Calculator

Percy: The Protection Calculator is designed to provide those living in the UK with a helpful estimate of their potential financial benefits if they are unable to work due to illness or injury. There may be other factors to take into consideration when calculating these potential benefits, including those set out in the calculators assumptions below. The Calculator is not intended to provide or be a replacement for professional financial advice.

Calculator assumptions

Percy: The Protection Calculator provides a point in time assessment of the level of financial support you would receive from the state and your employer if you were unable to work due to illness or injury. Individuals should seek to reassess their financial situation should any personal circumstances change. Please note that this Calculator does not replace the need to seek professional financial advice.

This Calculator operates based on several key assumptions. These assumptions are:

  • Calculations should be treated as a helpful estimate, which will only be as accurate as the information entered.
  • Percy The Protection Calculator operates on the assumption of full Universal Credit roll out. Please be aware that results may differ for areas where Universal Credit has not yet been introduced.
  • The Calculator assumes that workers are entitled to Statutory Sick Pay. (SSP). Self-employed individuals must be aware that they are not entitled to SSP
  • The Calculator assumes that any additional company sick pay will be paid for no longer than 6 months. It is important for individuals to consult their employer to find out the exact details of their company’s sick pay provisions.
  • The Calculator assumes that Individual and Group Income Protection policies will start payment of benefits after 6 months. It is important for individuals to consult their insurer or refer to their insurance policy to obtain their exact policy benefits, and/or to speak to their employer about the exact terms of their relevant employer policy. Deferred periods can vary according to the individual or employer requirements and can be longer or shorter than the 6 months assumed here.
  • The Calculator currently does not differentiate between the Universal Credit welfare entitlement for Group Income Protection or Individual Income Protection. It is important to note that Individual Income Protection is subject to a deduction of welfare entitlement at a rate of £1 for every £1 of insurance benefit. Group Income Protection does not affect how much you will receive from Universal Credit.
