New Living Standards Index reveals London's pockets of poverty
Eighteen London boroughs have come together to pool administrative data on the financial security of 550,000 low-income families, thanks to support from Trust for London. The data has been brought to life in our new publicly-available Living Standards Index for London.

The Index’s interactive map allows anyone to explore where London’s poverty hotspots are and the types of households affected. We'll share the findings of our latest wave of research at our Steering Group on Wednesday 5 June.
Children's Commissioner's Office asks Policy in Practice to research welfare reform impacts
Haroon Chowdry, Head of Analysis at the Office of the Children’s Commissioner spoke in our April webinar about the crucial missing information about family context within children's, and the important role that benefits data can play in the early identification of vulnerability.

Policy in Practice shared new analysis for the CCO on the impact that welfare reforms will have on levels of child vulnerability. We looked in depth at Universal Credit, the 5 week wait, Universal Credit advance payment, the 2 child limit and the combined impact of reforms and found that, overall, more households were struggling or at risk, whilst fewer were coping.

Haroon said "This is really rich analysis. People can have a tendency to think of that as abstract, a nice-to-have, but it’s really powerful. This is useful for intervening with particular families and households so we can, in theory and in practice, identify those households that are being put at risk of being at risk because of the two child limit or because of the move to Universal Credit."
Bumper month for modelling CTR schemes
Last month we provided over 25 models for council tax reduction (CTR) support schemes for our local authority clients. Typically many of the scheme objectives are similar but local variations look at administrative savings, retaining costs at current levels and ensuring that schemes are simple to understand. The migration of people to Universal Credit is also an impetus for reviewing CTR schemes.

In case you missed our recent webinar, Council tax support models that Members can sign up to, you can watch the shortened sub-titled video below to hear Allan Clarke, Barnet Council, talking about the role Members played in creating Barnet's new scheme.
Wales: Discovering data workshop held
We held a discovering data workshop in Flintshire last month with eight local authorities curious about what their administrative data can tell them. Hosted by Peter Carter and Terrin Mathew, attendees from across Wales and the North West compared notes about current challenges, the rollout of Universal Credit and discussed how they're using their data now.

The workshop inspired people with delegates sharing stories of how their data had been used to drive impact. This had helped them to build the case for using their own locally held datasets to better identify vulnerability and target support for households.

Due to interest elsewhere we're taking this workshop on the road and will be hosting events in Bath, Birmingham and Durham in July. If you'd like us to come to your area too please let us know.

Scotland: IRRV Universal Credit Conference 2019
Policy in Practice was invited to present at the IRRV Scotland's IRRV Universal Credit Conference 2019 on Thursday 18 April in Grangemouth. Peter Carter and Megan Mclean presented Universal Credit's hidden hardships: case studies of councils intervening early to a particularly engaged audience.

At the very well attended conference they shared success stories of how other councils such as Luton Council, Croydon Council and London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, amongst others, are analysing their datasets to identify vulnerability and target support.
Italy: Policy in Practice presented at Rome Startup Week #rsw19
Policy in Practice was asked to present at Rome Startup week alongside the deputy Mayor of Rome and other local government officials.

Giovanni Tonutti introduced the audience to Policy in Practice and our work in the UK. He also spoke about the potential for policy expertise combined with data to drive impact across Italy. Other meetings with councils in Rome and Turin also took place on the trip.
London Challenge Poverty Week, 14 – 20 October 2019
Organisations across the capital will be joining forces to highlight the reality of poverty in London and the innovative work being done to tackle it, during London Challenge Poverty Week later this year.

London Local Authorities are working hard to tackle poverty for their residents. The 4 in 10 London's Child Poverty Network wants to highlight best practice from local authorities, in particular under themes such as employment, food, advice & support, housing, health and income.

You can find out more about the programme of events and how to get involved by emailing 4 in 10: London’s Child Poverty Network.

How frontline organisations can prepare for managed migration
Wednesday 15 May at 10:30

Local organisations who deliver frontline support play an important role in helping people get ready to move onto Universal Credit. The rollout of Universal Credit means there is more pressure on support organisations to make sure their customers are prepared for the changes ahead.
